No thesisizing happened last night because some fabulous ladies and I went to see Juliette Lewis, Cat Power, and the Pretenders (Chrissie FUCKING Hynde). Click and scroll down for photos, courtesy of Brooklyn Vegan.
Despite the swelter, it was amazing.
I really can't tie it to the thesis, but there's something to be said for watching ladies fucking rock out. It's certainly inspiring. And oh so hot. Especially Chrissie Hynde. She makes you notice, and you notice that she hasn't lost a beat.
And we all love that sultry Chan Marshall. It would have been fun to see her when she was still a mess though. Juliette Lewis takes the award for most outfit flair. Homegirl had a ball, and it is a joy to watch someone do something they love. I wanted to be a rock start when I was... nah, I still do. It is a most satisfying fantasy.
Hit back with comments about Pretenders/Cat Power/Juliette (though prepare to be ended if you try and dump on the Pretenders, I really can't be understanding about that today). Also gonna open this up to comments about music that motivates - especially for writers.
The opening to this song is badass:

Post The First
"There would have been no beginnings; instead, speech would proceed from me, while I stood in its path - a slender gap - the point of its possible disappearance." - Michel Foucault, Discourse on Language
Hello, Internet.
Welcome to my first post.
As I gear up to the beginning to write, I grapple with the issue of distraction. I don't think I can eliminate distraction in its entirety. I don't think I want to either. Distraction leads to distance from a project that can be helpful, but I don't want to distract myself with too many unproductive things that are bound to make me feel guilty and, subsequently, less motivated. I also enjoy kvetching about the trials and tribulations of graduate school. And, full disclosure, I was a little inspired by Julie Powell, having just seen Julie/Julia. And so, my (new) blog is born. I won't be meeting with my advisor for a couple more weeks, but the following is on the docket until then:
- compile new book list about influence of Western fem. in Iran, theories of adaptation (specifically text -> video), important works on video art (especially Mid-East), and other helpful texts
- create calendar to manage the PhD application process
- finish reading and formalize notes on Nima Naghibi's excellent Rethinking Global Sisterhood. If anyone has read, get at me. Also, if you're interested, you can read about it/buy it here: http://www.upress.umn.edu/Books/N/naghibi_rethinking.html
Maybe you're wondering why I don't have making some kind of calendar for thesis writing up there, well, I want to meet with my advisor first. I already have some text written, and I think I'll feel better getting those three things out of the way first.
That's it for now. Hope everyone's having a wonderful day on the internet.
